On Jan. 25, 2025, at the Teatro Comunale del Giglio in Lucca, the young dancers of the Scuola di Ballo dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala, directed by Frédéric Olivieri, were admirable performers of a suite from Mario Pistoni’s La strada, with music by Nino Rota, in an evening that tested them in a composite program, with choreography characterized by high technical difficulties, signed by contemporary authors of absolute caliber.
The students succeeded in restoring the narrative character of La strada, a ballet conceived by Pistoni for the Teatro alla Scala in 1966, with the collaboration of Nino Rota, who had written the score drawing on the film’s musical themes, but with “many new musical ideas, always germinated in the climate of the fable.” The film’s subject, as Pistoni himself, fascinated by Fellini’s visionary realism, recalled, particularly lent itself to a choreographic transposition “because of the transformability to ballet of the facts, the believability of the characters, authentic, the theatricality and the stimulating coexistence of the agro but fantastic world of the circus with the raw and realistic world of life, all (what is most qualifying balletistically) imbued with poetry, simple and genuine actions and reactions.” A title that required considerable interpretive skills from the young performers and allowed them to confront the poignant narrative of a great author like Pistoni.
