The workshop “AI & Visual Development: Human-AI Interaction in Animation,” organized by NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, in collaboration with IED – Istituto Europeo di Design, was held on November 18 and 19, 2024 at the NABA campus in Milan, as part of the AFAM Grand Tour.

Leading the workshop was internationally renowned director and animator Yelysaveta Pysmak known for works such as My Fat Arse and I (2020), winner of prestigious awards, including second prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation and Oscar qualification at the Animator festival. The workshop explored the interaction between human creativity and artificial intelligence through the AI-Human Ping Pong Method, an innovative approach to the visual development of scenes and characters. Participants experimented with advanced techniques such as neural transfers and Control.NET nodes, with a focus on visual exploration and inner artistic intention.
The goal of the workshop was to develop a new awareness in the use of AI in the creative process, experimenting with ways of co-creation that could enhance both human and technological input. The focus was not only on the technical possibilities, but also on the inner reflection that digital art can stimulate.
The workshop was designed for students with basic animation skills who were able to integrate their own work material: sketches, rough animation, photographs or artwork with AI. A unique experience of creative experimentation aimed at exploring a new creative paradigm through the dialogue between art and technology, opening a debate on how artificial intelligence can transform the contemporary design landscape.
