Finalist project of the international contest “Normal is Extraordinary” which bears the signature of Caterina Sofia Martinengo – a student of STM School of Musical Theater.
For the author, the concept of “normal” does not exist. What appears ordinary – an object, a face, a look – is actually the result of encounters, coincidences and relationships that change the way we see the world. It is precisely in the absence of the normal, in the diversity of characters and emotional nuances, that the extraordinary is born.
Her project is an installation that comes to life from an acrylic painting on canvas (60×80 cm), constructed as a layering of gazes: the people she met in her first two decades of life, remembered and reinterpreted through the filter of emotional memory.
Alongside the painting, photographs of the eyes and a stop-motion video narrate the entire creative process, making visible what normally remains interior.
The setting will be a white room, a neutral space that focuses attention on color and its superimpositions, a central theme of the author’s artistic research. The painting becomes the transposition of her soul, a chromatic archive of relationships, emotions and presences.
An avowedly infinite project: each new encounter may add a new level, a new stroke, a new color. Because what seems normal lives and transforms through others, becoming extraordinary each time.
