Douglasia

Project

Visual Arts

A project by Federico Fortuna, a student at Accademia Italiana and a finalist in the GTA Contest

The Douglas fir is a majestic tree, among the tallest in the world: it can reach 70 meters in height, with a trunk more than two meters in diameter. It grows quickly and adapts to almost any type of terrain, which is why it has always been a valuable resource for humans.

Its light but strong wood finds use in shipbuilding and architectural construction, carpentry, and even the paper industry. It is a versatile material, combining strength, elasticity and durability.

Native to Pacific forests, the Douglas fir has found new roots over time in Italy as well, becoming a key player in reforestation programs in mountainous areas. Some specimens reach 100 meters and live more than 1,300 years, true witnesses to the strength and beauty of nature.

With ” Douglasia ” Federico Fortuna reflects on this tree as a metaphor for balance and regeneration-a bridge between science, ecology, and human intervention.
