The event AI x Visual Arts. Exploring Artificial intelligence. , which took place from October 14 to 18, 2024, represented an important opportunity to explore the encounter between artificial intelligence and creative disciplines.
The project, included in WP3, Digital Cultural Heritage, of the Afam Grand Tour, was organized by RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts and saw the collaboration of CNR – ISPC and Sapienza – University of Rome and the participation of students and students from the different partner academies.
The event was structured into 4 workshops, focusing on the use of specific applications of AI in different disciplinary areas, and an opening seminar common to all participants.
The main objective was to open up, in the academic context, a reflection on Artificial Intelligence by emphasizing the importance of developing critical, language-independent thinking in order to understand how to use these tools consciously.
The four workshops immersed participants and focused on specific applications of AI:
– Between the lines. Nonlinear Writing Workshops for Audiovisual with Artificial Intelligence
– Exploring Memory and AI: The Evolution of Archival Practices
– Artificial Intelligence in the Visual Arts: Practical Applications of ChatGPT and Midjourney
– GEN-AI: The Revolution of Computer Graphics and Working Tools for the Designer
Prior to the hands-on immersion, the seminar created a research space for critical dialogue, encouraging participants and attendees to question ethical and professional responsibilities in the use of AI. The seminar featured Marco Arizza (First Researcher, CNR – ISPC and CID Ethics), who explored the importance of an ethical approach in research, Silvia Scalzini (Prof. Ass. UniParma, Coord. Master Luiss, CID-Ethics CNR Associate) with whom concrete cases and emerging regulations were discussed, exploring how AI is redefining the concept of creativity and intellectual property, Alfredo Valeri (RUFA Lecturer and Head of Research and Innovation Associazione Civita) who explored how AI is transforming the creative professions, highlighting its strengths but also its threats. Finally, the last two talks introduced the more specific topics of design, with Emanuele Panizzi (Head of GamificationLab Sapienza University of Rome) focusing on the UX (User Experience) field, and Michele Pio Di Pasquale (Developer, teacher, consultant) exploring the role of generative AI in the field of visual arts and design, with a focus on image creation.
